Basic Introduction:

The United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are a set of 17 interconnected global goals to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure peace and prosperity for all. What can Colleges and universities do for SDG?

Colleges and universities can play a significant role in advancing the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through their teaching, research, and engagement activities. Here are some actions that colleges and universities can take to support the SDGs:

  • Integrate the SDGs into the curriculum:
  • Incorporate the SDGs into coursework, research projects, and other academic activities to raise awareness and increase knowledge about sustainable development.
  • Promote sustainability on campus: Encourage sustainable practices on campus, such as reducing waste, conserving energy and water, and promoting sustainable transportation options.
  • Support research and innovation: Support research and innovation that addresses the challenges of sustainable development, such as developing clean technologies, improving food security, and reducing the impacts of climate change.
  • Engage with the local community: Partner with local organizations, businesses, and government agencies to address sustainable development challenges and create positive impacts in the community.
  • Foster a culture of sustainability: Create a culture of sustainability on campus by encouraging students, staff, and faculty to adopt sustainable practices in their personal and professional lives.
  • Collaborate with other institutions: Collaborate with other colleges and universities, as well as international organizations, to share knowledge, best practices, and innovative solutions to advance the SDGs.

By taking these actions, colleges and universities can play a key role in advancing the SDGs and help to create a more sustainable future for all.

Dr. Jerry Choi's Suggestions:

WKU CBPM Management, Global Business, and Marketing (MGM) has proactively engaged in creating new knowledge for Sustainability for many years.

We would like to continually serve for the wonderful Green Campus Initiative.
We hope these several inputs can help you.
Suggestions:

1. We'd better clarify the "Goals and Key Objectives" of the Initiative.

- What is the main purpose of the initiative?
- Do we want to achieve "Carbon Neutrality?" by campus wide?
- Do we want to achieve "RE100" campus by when?
- Do we want to get ISO24001 Certificate (Environmental Management system Certificate)?

2. We'd better have a rough "Timeline" for those proposed objective of the initiative.
- By when, and How much are those objectives achieved?
- If we have the timeline, we can bring more practical actions.

3. We'd better setup a more "Socially Responsible" strategy for the Green Campus Initiative.
- We can elaborate the Initiative in terms of ESG concept (Environment, Social Responsibility, and Governance).
- We can elaborate the initiative in terms of Community Engagement (collaborating with Liao and Ouhai Government).

4. For Reusable Energy source, We may focus on three "practical options"
- Solar Panel
- Hydrogen Fuel Cell
- Biomass

These three options sound more practical than earth heat exchange, air/wind energy.

5. We can bring external experts like BOSCH to build "integrative reusable energy solution" for campus management.
- WKU CBPM Management and Marketing Professors (including Candy, Rob, and Jerry) worked for Sustainability Projects.
- We have nice business connections who can help our campus to bring a sustainable energy solution.
- If necessary, we can consult our initiative with those business solution providers.

6. CBPM Building Ideas:
- We proposed installing Solar Panels at the North Side in 2020. We proposed it again.

I would like to start with a fantastic news.

As many of you know, On July 29th, Kean University's CBPM joined the elite AACSB group, a big name in global business education. This is a big win for us, showing the strong leadership and teamwork across our global community. Now, CBPM, known for its popular courses in management, marketing, and global business, and more, is part of a select group that makes up less than 6% of schools worldwide with this top-notch recognition. It's a huge step in offering the very best world-class education to our students.

[A big thank you to Dr. Tobin Porterfield for all his hard work in making this happen. Let's give him a huge round of applause!] --

In the opening day remarks on Aug. 31, President Ramont Repollet announced a new mission and core values. Aligning with the newly proposed mission and values, CBPM leadership would like to synergize them with our AACSB quality. Then, we are currently proposing one more strategic dimension – That is Societal Impact.

--

Kean University and the AACSB are synergizing to spotlight the societal impact through initiatives like community engagement, sustainability, and fostering quality education for everyone, including those who are underserved.

We're proud to announce that our College of Business at the Wenzhou campus is actively aligning with this strategic direction. Our management faculty and business students have been enthusiastically embracing this new focus.

Today, we're eager to share our progress with you and we welcome your valuable input and support to help us reach even higher standards.

--

First, we want to spotlight a pioneering project led by our College of Business students, aimed at bolstering the circular economy and fostering a sustainable society.

The "Trash-X” project was an innovation conceived and developed right here at WKU CBPM.

--

Secibdm The O-K Center (a local Wenzhou campany) and our CBPM team are joining forces to revitalize neighborhoods near our Wenzhou campus that need a bit of a boost.

And the best part?

The local Government of Ouhai and Li’ao are fully behind us!

We're eager to get started on this project and make a positive impact in our community.

--

We highlight CBPM's ongoing commitment to fostering sustainability through our innovative educational approach. Our MGS*4999 Capstone courses, along with other project-based learning modules, serve as platforms where students can bring forward fresh ideas and take tangible actions towards promoting sustainability. Here are samples of “Wang.Zai Village Development Project”.

--

In line with Kean's new direction and the AACSB's focus on making a positive impact on society, we at the Wenzhou campus's College of Business have kicked off some important projects.

But this is just the beginning.

We're really looking forward to working together with more people and groups to do even more good.

Thank you!
