2021.10.27: Team Structure of PMC Program at O-K Center

Background:

The PMI Certificate Program development idea can be traced back to April  2018.

The purpose of the PMP (PMI Certificate) program was WKU CBPM wanted to engage in "Wenzhou Business community" more to serve Community Economy Development.

A PMI expert - Dr. Sarmann Kennedyd proposed the PMI & PMP development both in WKU and Kean USA in order to meet the high demand of the Project Management certificate not only from the student side but also from the Wenzhou business community.

We had the following draft of planning. And you can see the attached PMP idea draft in the attached file.

2021.10.27: WKU CBPM & O-K Center Project Management Certificate Program Meeting

https://youtu.be/kwEYV1D4fCY

Meeting Minutes (Oct. 27, 2021)

-----------------
Executive Summary:
- OK Center and WKU CBPM MGM had a business meeting (Oct. 27, 7pm - 9pm @ CBPM B-208).

- OK Center was interested in working with WKU CBPM to address "Real Business Problem Solving" with professional business consulting projects.

- Due to the scarcity of Faculty resources, WKU CBPM MGM offered 1) PBL initiative, 2) WBCG group, and (potential) Outreach program for O-K center.

- Next move will be continually discussed.
-----------------

O-K Center (OneHRT) came to WKU CBPM MGM to discuss the "Project Management Certificate (PMC) program".

Lisa (CEO of O-K Center), Florence (O-K Center), Dr. Jacob Chang (Economics), and a student translator came to the virtual conference room (CBPM B-208) at 7PM ~ 9PM (Oct. 27, 2021).

Dr. Jerry Choi introduced the current situation of PMC program in WKU CBPM.

A. Current Situation of PMC Program in WKU CBPM
1. April 2018, the PMC program was initiated
2. KU / WKU developed a Project Management course (MGS3xxx).
3. Unfortunately, key talent left and the program was stopped in 2019.
4. WKU CBPM Dean encouraged MGM to collaborate with O-K center for the PMC program (Sept. 28, CBPM meeting).
5. MGM re-structured potential 'instructors' of the PMC program.

B. O-K Center's New Idea (Business Consulting Project Business?)

Lisa (O-K Center CEO) proposed "Professional Consulting Project" enterprise to WKU CBPM.

Faculty members can take several professional consulting projects and perform them to create revenue. However, Jerry raised a concern of 'faculty resource scarcity' for those professional business consulting projects outside of class.

Jerry proposed PBL initiative model that invites "real projects" to CBPM classes during the semester.
https://leadershipcenter.tistory.com/473

Also, he suggested using the Wenzhou Business Consultancy Group (WBCG, Director - Dr. Rob Marjerison) for potential collaboration.
https://leadershipcenter.tistory.com/515

Another idea is to create an "Outreach" program that interlinks with O-K center and WKU CBPM. While O- Center people work for professional consulting project, WKU faculty members can help them as "Advisory Business Partner".

KU and WKU are aligning with our important mission of "Engaging and Helping our Community". And WKU CBPM MGM will continually discuss and elaborate the "Collaboration" with the Wenzhou business.

MaotanChang High School: A factory unlike any other

毛坦厂(MaotanChang) is an unremarkable village. Situated in the valleys of eastern China’s Anhui Province amongst hundreds and thousands of villages, MaotanChang is, undoubted, the most boring of them all. Unlike villages with mines or drilling wells,

2021. 08 .18: New Provost Dr. David Birdsell's Four areas of CBPM

Aug. 02, 2021

The Provost discussed four areas he will invest time and energy over the next 1-2 years:

- Student Success: Retention and Graduation rates - wants to achieve above 50%, and see a double-digit improvement over the next few years.

- Faculty Success: Emphasized it is not only scholarship (how many papers published); but does scholarly work have any "Impact" on the local economy, theory, and practice? Important that we talk about the impact for research.

- Service: It is an important and a major part of our responsibilities and student success (Student advisement).

-. Responsiveness: External engagement - as a public urban research university, we have a responsibility to respond to the needs of our community and our region.

Deans and faculty should be involved in national, professional, and academic organizations. We need to think about how we can become more active and build relationships with the public and private sectors in the near future.

Charity Session : A New Interpreation of Charity and Public Welfare:

Teach People to Fish - Do good to the People of Wenzhou

Mr. Ye Zhengmeng, Security-General of Zhejiang Xinhu Charity Foundation

Summary of the Charity Lecture Series by Doris - 徐佳吟 Doris.

1.    Wrong charity methods will have adverse results. People who receive too much money will become dissatisfied and become evil, which called "Marginal effect of gratitude" or "the anger of loser." So choose appropriate donees is very important. There is a very important principle of choosing donees:

a. Focus more on giving to those who are temporarily short of money (e.g. people who suffer from disasters), not those who are desperately short of money.

b. An important saying: "One of the major obstacles to true and permanent goodness is undue giving."

c.  Undue giving will lead to two results:

                                          i.         Foster dependency

ii.         could result in moral kidnapping

2.    How to teach poor people methods(授人以渔)in a systematic way?

a. These things include:

      i.         Inspire people with desire. We should let people realize the importance of good life and possibility of having good life. Show bright future to poor people. Communication with poor people and make reasonable business with them: for example, we give part of money to poor people, and poor people also need to invest some money or efforts.

ii.         Teach people how to make money. Examples (emphasize the importance of teaching methods): 1. hire agricultural experts to teach poor farmers how to plant Cerasus humilis. 2. provide money for undergraduates to start up a business.

1) The greatest "method" is offering education.

iii.         Provide some initial money to poor people to start their business.

   iv.         Relieve poor people's worries

1) Worries include:

a)  afraid that products cannot be sold successfully.

b)  afraid that the price of products will fluctuate.

3. Developing leadership is more useful than teaching all people methods.

a. Example: countryside CEO plan

      i.         Leaders are the most important. Develop leadership.

ii.         Give leaders more knowledge, skills, and resources.

iii.         Some detailed way to develop leaders:

                               1)  Courses learning

                               2)  Base on practice

                               3)  Future plan planning

                               4)  Paid on board learning

                               5)  Synchronous tracking guidance

                               6)  Induction competition

International Business Administration (Master of Business Administration) at Wenzhou-Kean University officially recruited students this year, attracting everyone's attention

The latest national "Outline of the Yangtze River Delta Regional Integrated Development Plan" was released, and Wenzhou was listed as a 27 central city area and rejoined the Yangtze River Delta City Group.

In April 2020, the National Development and Reform Commission issued the 2020 central budget investment plan for the integrated development of the Yangtze River Delta region. Zhejiang has three projects included. Among them, the Wenzhou-Kean University project received a national Yangtze River Delta special fund subsidy of 60 million yuan.

This is the first national special subsidy fund for the Yangtze River Delta in our city

It is also the single project that received the most subsidies in our province this time

The International Master of Business Administration (MBA) program aims at training with a country the international vision and can act locally high level of outstanding management personnel, It can also help Wenzhou to take the fast lane of the Yangtze River Delta to a large extent and start the process of talent transfer in the new journey of integration.

Professional courses cover the necessary knowledge content applicable to the core management modules of various industries, such as management accounting, management economics, marketing management, management and leadership in a global environment, etc.

Our MBA teaching method also gives full play to the inquiry-based teaching concept of the American classroom, encouraging and cultivating students to be able to actively think while learning theoretical knowledge. For example, the compulsory course of this project also conducts cross-cultural management issues in a seminar mode. In-depth interpretation will be given to typical global management cases and problems.

When the epidemic is over and the global environment is relatively stable, we will also resume " Global Business Studies ", a course that can go to Kean University in the United States and companies in the New York area for management practices.

The professional elective course modules also set up different field directions, such as accounting, marketing, management, international business, etc., to fully meet the knowledge needs of people from different industries, provide a macro international perspective and forward-looking management knowledge, and help students Explore their own potential, cultivate innovative thinking, and calmly face the competition and challenges in the global business environment.

It is worth mentioning that this major has a strong faculty team, 100% of all teachers have a doctoral degree (some more than one doctorate), graduated from world-renowned universities, such as Columbia University, University of Houston, Pennsylvania State University, Temple University, etc. Etc., and have teaching experience and industry experience in universities all over the world (such as

He has taught global business management courses in Korea, Japan, Mexico and other parts of the world).

At the same time, the business school will also invite visiting professors from top business schools to the school to give special lectures to students every semester.

Dr. Jeonghwan (Jerry) Choi applies and experiments the an innovative and impactful business pedagogy that underpins the 'contents-making'.

Students of his course are making 'video or contents' for class project.

Based on the buisness inquiry such as

"How to manage oneself?"

"How to get people to work by themselves?"

Students form teams by themselves, and they work on the semester long project.

How To Write a Professional Business Email? (By Dr. Jerry Choi at WKU CBPM)

Email is an important communication tool in business.
For example, a business executive gets over 100 emails daily.

But many do not write an email in a proper way.
A wrong form of Email makes a reader frustrated, and the sender cannot get what intended to.

Harvard Business Review suggests the best practice of Business Email writing.
Learning from the Military practice, Sehgal suggested three guidelines.
Here, I added two more guides for better Email writing in the real world.

These five suggestions are….

First, Subjects with Keywords in the Title sentence
Second, Bottom Line Up Front - BLUF
Third, Be Economical - Bullet type is recommended
Fourth, Keep the structure,  containing 5W and 1H, Whom, Why, What Where, When, How
Fifth, clearly indicate who is the sender.

With keeping these five suggestions, you can write this style of professional Email.

In the title, you can clearly describe what is the purpose of your Email with a “Keyword”.

In the first line, You can clearly indicate ”Whom” you are sending your Email to.

Then, you can give the ‘Bottom Line’ of your Email.

Providing background or details will help a reader to take action.

Be polite, and please tell the receiver who is sending this Email and how to get you.

This is it.

Let’ keep these ‘Business Email Writing’ rules to make a professional communication.

WKU CBPM Building Operational Improvement

CBPM has a nice building to provide world-class education. But it needs to get improved continually in operation. Social Media Lab, 2nd Floor Outdoor space, and the North side of the building can provide operational excellency if we can improve it slightly.

Social Media Lab is to create world-class business educational contents. But it has risks of fire and health for poor indoor materials.

2nd-floor outdoor space can be extended as a part of “Business Research and Innovation Center (BRIC)” where it can provide “Business events such as Business speech; business gatherings, invite talks; Quartet, and small performance. This space can provide the chance to build a business network with the Wenzhou business community (This space can host 500 persons).

North side of the building (adjacent to the large indoor Auditorium) can be used as the “Outdoor Theater” as it was designed for if we can add solar panel and stage. This space can host a medium-size school event such as freshman welcoming or graduation ceremony (This space can host 1,000 persons).

Suspended the Social Media Lab improvement for a while (Jan. 2021) for Budget problem.

Dec. 08, 2020:

The Social Media Lab Improvement plan is suspended because a resolution was not achieved between Social Media Director and Logistics Department. The space will remain the same as it is.  But "Risk of Fire" will be continually addressed.

Adding to the improvement, a Cafe facility can be installed in the 2nd floor. (2020. Jan. 14)

5. College of Business - Management, Global Business, and Marketing Banner Installed on the 2nd Floor spaces (Oct. 24, 2020)

6. Jan. 2021: Equipped "First Aids Package" and "WheelChair" for Medical Emergency Situation at the 2nd floor of CBPM building.

Dr. Jerry Choi coined the idea and donated the Medical Aid box and wheelchair.

Dr. Margaret Chen suggested first aid medicines and materials.

Dr. Candy Chiu suggested Wheelchair.

Feb. 23, 2021: Suggestion of CBPM Building's Operational Adjustment with the New Campus Buildings.

New Campus Building: Architect (started operation in Feb. 2021).

You may know that WKU CBPM has around 60% student body size, and we have served many external operations in cooperating with the school's demand.

And it's time to adjust the school space operational adjustment with the new campus building.

Originally, CBPM had "Library" space and "Project Rooms" space on the first floor of our building.

But those spaces are used for 'Exhibition Room' and some strange outside activities, not for CBPM purposes as below.

"Could we talk and negotiate to make operational adjustments of CBPM building with new campus buildings?".

One thing is clear for us, CBPM needs more space to manage 'larger numbers of CBPM students' day by day.

And we wish we can make excellent 'operations' of each campus building continually.

Please kindly consider this suggestion, and please feel free to contact us to talk about 'Operational Adjustment'.

WKU Student Career Development supports student's participation in innovation and entrepreneurship development within WKU Campus.  Career development center would like to provide a necessary resource for making several Video content for the "Small Tree Project Team".

Fortunately, WKU CBPM started operating the Social Media Lab from Nov. 2019. And the Lab possesses sufficient facilities to create quality videos and contents at the studio.

The expenses of CBPM social media lab is "50 RMB for 30 minutes".

And all monetary gains go to a Public Fund that is coordinated by WKU Foundation and CBPM’s Center for Social Enterprise and Charity Research Center.

Collaborating with WKU CBPM Dean’s office, Social Media Lab, CSEC,, WKU Foundation, and WKU Student Career Development,  We would like to donate 10 hours (equivalent to 1,000 RMB) of using the CBPM Social Media Lab to the "Small Tree Project Team".
