No Trust, No Standing - 무신불립(無信不立)

The phrase "무신불립(無信不立)" can be translated into English as "Without trust, one cannot stand" or "No trust, no standing."

The phrase conveys the idea that trust is essential for establishing stability or credibility, whether it be in personal relationships, organizations, or nations.

The aforementioned statement is found in the 'Ann Yeon' section of the "Analects."

When his disciple, Ja Gong, inquired about politics, Confucius responded, “It is to provide ample food (足食), maintain a strong military (足兵), and gain the trust of the people (民信)."

Ja Gong then asked, “If it becomes inevitable to abandon one of these, which one should be forsaken first?" to which Confucius replied, “The military should be forsaken." When Ja Gong further asked, “If it becomes necessary to abandon one more from the remaining two, which one should it be?" Confucius answered, “Food should be forsaken."

Confucius elaborated, “Since ancient times, all people inevitably face death, but a nation cannot stand if it fails to earn the trust of its citizens."

In other words, to uphold a nation uprightly, the trust of the citizens is paramount.

제자 자공이 정치에 대해 물었을 때, 공자는 “충분한 식량을 제공하고(足食), 강한 군대를 유지하고(足兵), 백성의 신뢰를 얻는 것(民信)”이라고 답하였습니다.

 

자공이 다시 “만약 하나를 포기해야 한다면, 어떤 것을 먼저 버려야 하겠습니까?”라고 물었고, 공자는 “군대를 버려야 한다”고 답했습니다. 자공이 또 다시 “남은 두 가지 중에서 하나를 버려야 한다면, 어느 것을 버려야 하겠습니까?”라고 물자, 공자는 “식량을 버려야 한다”고 답하였습니다.

공자는 “예로부터 모든 인간은 죽음을 피할 수 없지만, 국가는 시민의 신뢰를 얻지 못하면 존재할 수 없다”고 설명하였습니다.

다시 말해, 국가를 바르게 유지하려면 국민들의 신뢰가 가장 중요하다는 것입니다.
