Breathe in the center of the U.S.

by Jeonghwan (Jerry) Choi 2009. 7. 8.
A strange sound is spreading out in a room at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Several people are sitting down with closing their eyes and making strange gestures in deep silence. They are professors and graduate students of the University, and they are conducting Kouksundo practice at Illini Union building, a center of the campus.

The Kouksundo Training Workshop was initiated by Jeong-Hwan Choi, a certified Sabum from Kouksundo World Federation, and Seon-Mi Kim on Feb. 2009 at the campus. As a president of Kouksundo club, Seonmi invited whole social work faculties and students to the practice, and more 25 sent RSVP and showed their interests in Kouksundo practice, which was believed to be an exotic experience for them. In addition, some members were recruited by Choi sambum with his personal networks or karmic connections on the campus.

Even though some people were interested in health improvement, majority were more interested in experiencing a special 'meditation' which seemed very different from popular Yoga or Taichi.

At the first workshop for Kouksundo practice, Choi sabum introduced Kouksundo with nicely formatted slides (refer to below slideshare) to help people understanding basic concepts and principles.

He explained the Kouksundo was the oldest meditation practice in human history and it was directly and secretly descended from master to pupils . The practice became a foundational human wisdom, and evolved into many other principles such as Yoga, Taichi, Religion, or spiritual self-disciplines. He added, the Kouksundo could be differentiated from it's reciprocal processes among body, mind, and spirit, and focusing on the human development through center breathing (Doldan breathing, he said).

On every Saturday or Friday, Kouksundo Club members come together, and practice it about 2 hours through semester. Starting with 15 participants on February, 7 to 10 members have practiced in regular bases.

First four sessions were devoted to familiarize people in Kouksundo stretching and mind control, and then Junggi Danbeop practices were taught step by step. None the less odds gestures and abnormal silence, all members tried to follow Choi sabum's instruction. And they could indulged into their own center breathing consequently.

Since Kouksundo is an unique cultural heritage in Korea, Seonmi, the president, sometimes organized cultural events such as Lunar New Year Festival and Kimchi day. Through these cultural events, members could enhance their understanding of Kouksundo as well as Korea.

Kouksundo is relatively new and strange for the U.S. citizens, but they are ready to adopt this new practice.
However, some prerequisites are highly demanded by them as well.

First, Kouksundo needs more scientific and rigorous understandings.
Many participants on Kouksundo Club in the UIUC are apt to requiring more scientific evidences and rigorous understandings of Kouksundo. They never stop asking questions about Kouksundo disciplines and 'reasons' which are not be easily answered. For example, many participants cast a question of relationship between the practice and personal development with respect to body, mind, and spirit. Especially, many Americans doubt the Kouksundo is a branch of Chinese Taichi or Indian Yoga, not origin of them.

Second, Kouksundo should be integrated with Korean culture.

As described before, Kouksundo can be understood more easily when Americans can understand the Korean culture. Therefore, special efforts is highly desirable for enhancing Korean culture integrating Kouksundo.

Third, Kouksundo needs more global talents.

The name of Kouksundo representative is 'Kouksundo World Federation.' But the word of 'World' has relatively weak sense for Kouksundo organizations or members. We, Kouksundo family should devote ourselves to be a global talent who can explain our discipline to global citizens. In addition, we need to recruit more global talents, who may be our representative, as our family.

Finally, Kouksundo should develop many hedonic contents with keeping our strong discipline.

'Being too good is apt to be uninteresting.' and Kouksundo is not an exception. Even though the Kouksundo is believe that it is very good for health, personal development, many trainees are easily get tired and lose their motivation to keeping practice. Many researches suggested that 'Hedonic experiences' reinforce trainee's motivation and awakening of meaning. Therefore, Kouksundo leaders should consider how we can provide unique values and interesting experiences to trainees.

In the center of the U.S., a small seed of Kouksundo is planted. A small and weak burgeon has come out, and it is not sure survive or dead. But, I strongly believe the word that 'I am transferring what I learned from masters. Once I am doing my duty, the heaven will decide the destiny.'

Acknowledgement: I hope to present my special thanks to Master Lim Kyong Taek, who taught me the Kouksundo and have strongly supported me to open the Kouksundo club at UIUC.
